Clairvoyant up and coming pop-punk outift, Fortune Teller have been making a name for themselves recently. Their debut EP, Premonitions was met with some serious critical acclaim when it landed back in March. Earning the Welsh five piece air time on both Kerrang and BBC radio right out of the gate. Meaning you don’t need a Magic 8 Ball to see that they have a bright future ahead.
Not content to bask in their burgeoning success however. The boys from Glamorgan bounced back into the limelight once again this weekend, dropping Lucid State. A powerful new single that adds a twist to the pop punk formula that made Premonitions such a hit with fans of the likes of Neck Deep and The Story So Far. Which, while not straying too far from the bands punk rock path, has a very midwestern emo vibe to it. Thanks to its delicate arpeggiated intro and cathartic vocals. Making it reminiscient of the early 00’s era that was dominated by the likes of American Football and Sunny Day Real Estate.
When asked about the change in direction, Fortune Teller had this to say- “Lucid State marks a shift for us both sonically and thematically. While still rooted in our pop-punk foundations, we leaned into softer elements and more vulnerable moments to explore something deeper than we have before.
It follows Mason’s journey of unexpectedly finding a real connection after a period of self healing capturing the feeling of stepping into something new that feels almost dreamlike, and not wanting to let it go.”
Behind the scenes, you can definitely hear a step-up in the production too. Which was by no means bad before. However, the more polished guitar sound and extra emphasis on the drums really help elevate Lucid State. Making the prospect of a follow up EP, or dare we hope, a full length album all the more enticing.
